metropolitan statistical area (MSA)

a geographic unit comprised of one or more counties around a central city or urbanized area with 50,000 or more population. Contiguous counties are included if they have close social and economic links with the area's population nucleus. Also known as a standard metropolitan statistical area (SMSA).
